Retinal examination

In this section, using sophisticated devices, it is possible to have a very accurate assessment of the retina and the internal components of the eye. Some of these evaluations include:

  • Angiography: Fluorescein (Indocyanine green (ICG)) is injected into the arm vein and a fundus camera is used to take the back of the eye. This test is used to check for retinal and choroidal blood flow. Fluorescein is commonly used to examine the retinal vessels and the ICG to examine the choroidal and deeper vessels. Fluorescein angiography is more commonly used to assess diabetic retinopathy, obstructive vascular diseases such as arterial or retinal vein obstruction, and to assess wet macular degeneration. ICG is used to screen for blood in the macula, such as age-related wet degeneration. Both types of substances have very few side effects and can be safely used. Allergic reactions may rarely occur in some people. ICG is prohibited in people who are allergic to iodine. Fluorescein may cause jaundice in the skin or eyes for up to 24 hours after injection and may cause urine to turn orange.
  • HRA Angiography: Using this technique increases the accuracy of fluorescein and ICG angiography and allows for the recording of angiography.
  • OCT or Optic Coherence Tomography: A new technique that provides ophthalmologists with valuable information from retinal layers using high-resolution tomographic sections. It is therefore used to diagnose and track many retinal diseases such as macular punctures, macular edema, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Since this technique uses a light source, there is no need for eye contact and it takes only a few seconds.
